A language centered classroom setup
The classroom setup is a very important aspect to learning. The classroom should be a welcoming place where children feel comfortable and can focus on learning. Distractions must be eliminated or minimized as much as possible.
Windows
must be considered carefully. Lighting is very important and natural
light from the outside is often desirable, but windows may need some
kind of blinds or curtains so that outside activities such as traffic
do not become a distraction from learning. Noise has to be considered
and controlled as much as possible, so that children can hear well and
are not drawn away from learning.
One classroom setup technique that is effective for children is to have different areas or places for specific kinds of activities. These may be created by moving furniture to set up defined spaces or by simply setting out a book box or some equipment to do a certain type of activity. Some areas that might be considered are:
- Book or print exploration area
- Creative area (toys, dress up clothes, creative equipment)
- Listening corner with CD player, CD's, headphones
- Library for children’s books. Be sure to include a special place for books the children have created so they can be re-read.
- Rug area for instruction and whole group activities
