How to teach sight words to young children
Young children are ready to learn beginning sight words at this stage . They become excited with each new word that they learn. Below are some activities that will help to teach these common beginning sight words.
What is important
- High-frequency words.
How to help children develop these concepts and skills
- Introduce the new word, then find several examples of it in books.
- Ask the children to write the new word using the sequence Look, Cover, Write, Check. (Watch the video below to see an example of this.)
- Play the game "My pile, your pile". Write the high-frequency words on flashcards. Show the flashcards one at a time. If the child is able to quickly read the card, it goes in his or her pile. If not, it goes in the teacher's pile. At the end of the game, reward the person with the biggest pile.
- Remember that these words are to be learned as a whole unit. They are not to be sounded out.
