Preschool Calendar Time

Preschool calendar time is very important to a great curriculum. Children need to learn that a calendar is a tool used to manage time. It represents days, weeks, months and years. We also use calendars to help us schedule and then remember what we’ve scheduled.

Young Children are just beginning to discover time.

They associate new activities with familiar activities. (You might tell a child that his birthday will come after he goes to bed 4 more times).
They learn that tasks can be done at different speeds (Walk, bike or drive to the park)
They organize time using repeating patterns. (The sun comes up and the sun goes down every 24 hours)

A calendar can be a powerful tool to help children visually organize time. It introduces the concepts:

Day
Week
Month
Year

Seasons and holidays can also be introduced.

A good preschool calendar curriculum will help children to master time. They will learn when their family does certain activities like go to the library and what special occasions or holidays are coming up. Some of them will even start to help you schedule outings with their friends or other activities.
