Reading fluency using sight words

Reading Fluency Sight WordsThe reason that you learn sight words is to build reading fluency. When children have to work to read every single word, reading becomes laborious and discouraging. When a child has a bank of words that are known by sight, reading fluency improves and it is easier to decode unknown words.

So how do we help children build fluency with sight words?

  1. Choose the most useful words. (High frequency words)
  2. Practice words in context. (Practice the words in a little phrase or a sentence that is easy for the children to read.)
  3. Work towards reading sight words and sight word phrases quickly.
  4. Frequently review all of the sight words that you have learned.
